Meet our Specialist Orthodontists
Our Specialist Orthodontists, Dr Anne-Marie Smith and Dr Anjli Patel, have both been recognised with the prestigious Chapman Prize. We are the only orthodontic clinic in the country where both principal orthodontists have this recognition.

About me
Having grown up in rural Lancashire, I relocated to London for university where I stayed for 15 years during my dental and orthodontic training. I moved to Derby in 2003 with my GP husband Kevin and daughter Emily, with Rebecca following soon after. I've loved watching my girls growing up in this beautiful county and we’ve made the most of Derbyshire's stunning countryside as a family.

ANNE-MARIE SMITH
Anne-Marie graduated from Guy's Hospital, London in 1992. After gaining a few years of experience in oral and maxillofacial surgery in and around the London hospitals, including Great Ormond Street Hospital for sick children, Anne-Marie obtained her Fellowship in Dental Surgery from Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Following this Anne-Marie undertook a three-year postgraduate orthodontic training programme at the prestigious Royal London Hospital, London, where she was awarded a MSc (Distinction) from the University of London in 1999 and Membership in Orthodontics (MOrth) from Royal College of Surgeons of England 2000 leading to registration as a Specialist Orthodontist with the General Dental Council in 2000. She went on to undertake a further two years of consultant training in treating complex cases at the Royal London Hospital and Whipps Cross Hospital and was awarded the tricollegiate Fellowship in Orthodontics (FDS Orth) in 2002. She was honoured to receive The Chapman Prize in 2002 from The British Orthodontic Society.
As well as working at No.1, Anne-Marie works part-time as an NHS Consultant in Orthodontics at Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and also holds a post of Honorary Clinical Lecturer within the School of Clinical Dentistry, University of Sheffield. Anne-Marie thoroughly enjoys training future orthodontists and is the former Training Programme Director for the Trent region, and is a highly respected specialist examiner in Orthodontics being the Chair of the Board for Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination (FDS Orth, the Consultants examination) and examiner for the Membership in Orthodontics (MOrth, the Specialists examination) for Royal College of Surgeons. She is the former Chair of Examiners for the Diploma in Orthodontic Therapy examinations. She holds the position of Chair of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Orthodontic Managed Clinical Network working with NHS England and is a member of the Local Dental Committee and the Local Professional Network. She is a member of the British Orthodontic Society, British Lingual Orthodontic Society and British Sleep Society.

About me
I was born in Kenya before moving to London at the age of 12, and later to Derby with my husband in 2011. When not working, we’re the busy parents of two beautiful daughters. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, cooking and exploring the outdoors. If I hadn’t become an orthodontist, I would have loved to be an adventurer like Ben Fogle.

Anjli Patel
Anjli graduated as a dentist in 2000 from the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital in Sheffield.
In 2004, Anjli commenced full-time specialist training in orthodontics at Kettering General Hospital and the Eastman Dental Institute, She obtained a Masters in Orthodontics from the University of London and her Membership in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. This was followed by a two-year consultant training pathway at Sheffield and Chesterfield to achieve the Fellowship in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons.
Anjli currently works as a consultant at the University Hospitals Derby and Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and at No 1 The Orthodontic Specialists. She is involved in the training of orthodontic specialists and has been the Training Programme Director for Orthodontic for Health Education England East Midlands for the past 3 years. She is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons.
She has presented her research at national orthodontic meetings and published papers in peer reviewed journals. She is involved with the British Orthodontic Society and is the Director of External Relations. She was part of the working group that advised the profession on how to respond to the pandemic and lockdown in 2020.
