Types of braces

At No1 The Orthodontic Specialists, we offer a range of orthodontic appliances to give you an option when it comes to straightening your teeth and creating that stunning new smile. We will recommend the right type of braces for you at your initial consultation but here’s a brief explanation of what each type of braces is like, how they work to straighten your teeth and how long treatment will take.

Traditional fixed braces

Fixed braces are the traditional method of orthodontic treatment and offer an effective and affordable solution to your smile imperfections. Suitable for children, teens and adults, traditional fixed braces can be either metal or tooth-coloured ceramic braces. These braces use a combination of small brackets, thin archwires and elastic bands to move your teeth into position. The brackets are fitted to the front of your teeth and the archwires connect them together. Gentle pressure applied via the archwires and elastic bands guide your teeth into the desired position to give you that stunning new smile. Depending on your individual needs, fixed braces treatment takes anywhere from 6-24 months. Fixed braces are the only brace option we have available for patients being treated under the NHS.

Clear braces

If discretion is your priority, then you’ll appreciate our clear braces. These use ceramic brackets which blend in with the natural colour of your teeth, making them easier to conceal and giving you greater confidence to show off your smile from day one. They use the same system as traditional fixed braces – brackets are fitted to the front surface of your teeth, and archwires and elastic bands help to apply gentle pressure to your teeth to guide them into position. Clear braces work just as effectively as metal fixed braces but are more discreet because the ceramic brackets are translucent.

Lingual braces

If the thought of being seen with braces is what’s keeping you from transforming your smile, lingual braces could be the perfect solution. Although they look much like traditional fixed braces, the difference is no one will be able to see them because they’re fitted behind your teeth (lingual means next to your tongue).

Lingual braces are customised to your mouth, which helps them to be more efficient, effective, less intrusive and relatively comfortable to wear. What’s more, because lingual braces are fixed to your teeth, albeit on the back surface, they allow for greater 3D control than removable treatments and can treat and improve a wide range of problems.

A small risk of orthodontic treatment is decalcification, an attack on tooth enamel producing white marks, usually the result of poor diet and poor oral hygiene. One benefit of lingual braces is that they are less likely to mark teeth than standard braces. Research shows that the damage which can occur is likely to be less severe and less frequent on lingual surfaces.

At No1 The Orthodontic Specialists, our specialist orthodontists are experienced in the Incognito lingual appliance system and the Win system.

Invisalign

If you want to avoid wearing traditional braces altogether, we have an alternative. Invisalign is the orthodontic treatment method which straightens teeth using virtually invisible, clear plastic aligners. These custom-made aligners fit over your teeth like a thin mouthguard and gradually move your teeth into position. Unlike fixed braces, Invisalign aligners can be removed for eating, brushing and flossing, although for optimal results it is recommended you wear your aligners for 20-22 hours per day. Invisalign aligners can also straighten teeth more quickly than traditional appliances, although the duration of your treatment depends on your specific needs. Invisalign treatment typically lasts between 9-18 months with each aligner being replaced fortnightly and regular reviews with your orthodontist approximately every 4-6 weeks.

Fast braces

If the only thing stopping you from achieving the perfect smile is a slight spacing issue between your teeth, or perhaps mild overcrowding, then our six-month brace alignment system could be the ideal treatment solution for you. The six-month alignment system uses clear brackets and wires to treat mild to moderate crowding and misalignment affecting the front six teeth and can achieve results in just six months. The brackets and wires are discreet and comfortable to wear, offer great value for money and can improve your smile quickly.
